Sunset Aperitif Cruise on the Gulf of Poets: Nimbus W9 Private Boat

Departing into the gulf, the first destination is Portovenere — recognisable immediately by its tall colourful terraced houses stacked along the medieval waterfront and by the Church of San Pietro, perched above the sea on the rocky tip of the promontory. Portovenere is part of the UNESCO World Heritage coastline that includes the Cinque Terre and the Palmaria archipelago, and seen from the water at this hour it is one of the most quietly spectacular scenes in all of Liguria.

Palmaria Island, Byron's Grotto and the Return Along the Shore

The second stop is Palmaria Island — the largest of the three UNESCO-listed islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto that guard the entrance to the gulf. Palmaria is a natural paradise for hikers, its coastline punctuated by natural sea caves and former military fortifications now converted into tourist facilities. Among the caves is the celebrated Grotta di Lord Byron, named after the English Romantic poet who famously swam these waters in the early 19th century.

During the cruise, one dedicated swimming stop is included in a sheltered bay, where a rich aperitif is prepared and served on board as the sun descends towards the horizon. On the return towards the port of departure, the boat passes the quiet seaside villages of Le Grazie, Fezzano and Cadimare along the inner shore of the gulf.

Six Guests, One Sunset, the Whole Gulf: The Nimbus W9 Experience

Some experiences work better small. The sunset aperitif on the Nimbus Weekender W9 is one of them. This is a 2021 motor boat — 9.5 metres of well-designed, responsive vessel with a Mercury F350 Verado XL engine and a character that is entirely different from a large charter yacht. It is quicker to move, easier to position exactly where the light is best, and capable of reaching coves and anchorages that larger boats pass at a distance. With a maximum of 6 guests, the dynamic on board is closer to a private evening with friends than to an organised excursion — and that distinction matters when the point of the trip is to be present, unhurried, and in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

The Nimbus departs at 6:00 p.m. — the hour when the day trippers have cleared the gulf and the water settles into the particular stillness of late afternoon. One of three departure ports can be chosen depending on where guests are based: La Spezia, Lerici or Portovenere, a flexibility that no larger charter vessel on this route can offer and that removes the logistical friction of getting to a single fixed marina.

Portovenere in the Late Afternoon Light

Portovenere in the hours before sunset is a different village from the one the guidebooks describe at midday. The crowds have thinned. The light is low and warm and entirely flattering to the medieval stonework — the Church of San Pietro lit from the west, the terraced houses along the waterfront in deep ochres and burnt reds, the whole scene framed by open sea behind the promontory. The Nimbus sits close in, nimble and quiet at anchor, and the scale of the boat means the view is unobstructed in every direction.

From Portovenere the boat moves to Palmaria Island, the largest and most accessible of the three UNESCO-protected islands — Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto — that define the southern edge of the gulf. Palmaria is the kind of island that rewards slow attention: the coastline is cut through with natural caves and shaped by the remains of military fortifications from several different centuries, now partly converted into visitor facilities and partly reclaimed by the vegetation. The most evocative of the caves is the Grotta di Lord Byron, the sea cave associated with the English Romantic poet who spent time on this gulf in the early 19th century and who reportedly swam from the Portovenere headland across to Lerici — a feat that has been debated and admired in roughly equal measure ever since.

The swimming stop happens when the light is at its most beautiful. The Nimbus anchors in a sheltered bay, the sun is low and orange, the water is still warm from the day. The aperitif is served on board: a genuinely simple pleasure that feels completely earned. For six people in a cove on the Gulf of Poets at golden hour, with a drink in hand and nowhere else to be, it is difficult to imagine a more satisfying way to spend an evening.

The return to port follows the inner shore of the gulf through Le Grazie, Fezzano and Cadimare — three small fishing communities on the sheltered western side of the gulf that most visitors to this coast never find. Their quiet waterfronts and weathered boats are the unhurried counterpoint to the drama of Portovenere forty minutes earlier. By 9:00 p.m. the Nimbus is back at the port of departure, and the evening — still warm, still lit by the last of the day’s colour — is entirely yours.

If poor marine weather conditions prevent rhe regular running of the tours, it can be scheduled at a later date, alternatively the full amount paid will be refund
For cancellation by the customer
For cancellations up to 60 days before departure, no cancellation fee is required
