Private Yacht Tour: Cinque Terre & Portovenere on the Maiora 20 Fly

Boarding at Porto Mirabello, La Spezia at approximately 10:00 a.m., return at around 5:00 p.m. — a 7-hour private yacht day aboard the Maiora 20 Fly, a 20-metre motor yacht completely refitted in 2024, with panoramic flybridge, bow sundeck and a maximum of 12 guests on an exclusive charter. After boarding and a short briefing with the captain, the yacht sets sail south towards the most iconic stretch of coastline in Italy.

The first leg takes you to the UNESCO-listed archipelago of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto — three spectacular islands at the entrance to the Gulf of Poets — before anchoring in front of Portovenere, where the Church of San Pietro, built in the 13th century, rises dramatically above the sea at the tip of the medieval promontory.

The Cinque Terre from the Sea: Five Villages, One Unforgettable View

From Portovenere the Maiora continues northwest along the coast to the Cinque Terre — the five legendary fishing villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Seen from the sea, the colourful houses stacked on sheer cliffs above crystal-clear water offer a perspective that no land-based visit can replicate.

It is important to note that the Maiora 20 Fly has the Cinque Terre Park Authority authorisation to enter the Marine Protected Area.

After the Cinque Terre, the yacht returns to the Gulf of Poets. Guests have the option to disembark on Palmaria Island for a typical local lunch (optional, not included) and/or land in Portovenere for a stroll through the picturesque medieval alleys of the village. Throughout the day, multiple stops for swimming and relaxing in the sun are scheduled; the Maiora's elongated transom makes sea access effortless from the stern platform. Disembarkation at the port of departure is expected at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Itineraries are subject to weather and sea conditions. The skipper may modify the route at any time to ensure the safety of all guests. Punctuality at boarding and disembarkation is required: delays will incur a charge of €120 per hour. In case of unjustified delay, the captain reserves the right to depart without the late guests.

Cinque Terre by Private Yacht: The Long View from Open Water

Most people see the Cinque Terre from the hiking trails above, or from the narrow streets within. A smaller number arrive by ferry and stand briefly on a harbour wall. Very few see them the way the fishermen who built these villages always saw them: from the sea, at a distance, the whole chain of five villages visible at once against the cliff face, the colours of the houses vivid even from miles away. The Maiora 20 Fly is built for exactly this perspective.

The yacht leaves Porto Mirabello at 10:00 a.m. and the first hour of the journey is among the most visually rewarding of the day. The islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto — part of the same UNESCO World Heritage designation that covers Portovenere and the Cinque Terre — rise from the water ahead as the boat clears the harbour. Their limestone cliffs and undeveloped coastlines are a reminder of what the entire northern Tyrrhenian shore looked like before it was discovered. The water around them is exceptionally clear: a protected marine zone that has had decades to recover, and shows it.

Portovenere: The Gothic Promontory and Byron’s Cave

Portovenere arrives as the first stop, the Maiora anchoring directly in front of the Church of San Pietro — 13th-century Gothic stonework in black and white stripes, positioned at the very tip of the promontory above the sea cave known as Byron’s Cave. The church, the cave, the medieval waterfront with its stacked coloured houses behind: the scene from the flybridge of a 20-metre yacht at anchor is one of the most composed and quietly spectacular on the entire Italian coast.

From Portovenere the Maiora heads northwest. The coastline becomes progressively more vertical, the villages more improbable in their construction, the colours more intense. The Cinque Terre reveal themselves one by one as the yacht moves along the coast — first the long beach of Monterosso, then the perfect harbour of Vernazza, then Corniglia high on its headland, then Manarola’s tower of houses above the water, then Riomaggiore closing the sequence. Seen together from open water, the five villages make a kind of visual argument for the UNESCO World Heritage designation that is difficult to dispute from any other angle.

Because the Maiora 20 Fly sails outside the Marine Protected Area — at the permitted distance of approximately 2 miles from the coast — the panoramic view is actually wider and more complete than from an inshore vessel. The entire cliff face, the full sequence of villages, the relationship between the architecture and the landscape: all of it is visible in a single sweep from the flybridge, in a way that the close-up inshore view does not always allow.

The return journey brings the boat back into the Gulf of Poets, and the afternoon takes on a more relaxed character. The swimming stops are timed to coincide with the warmest part of the day; the Maiora’s stern transom — flush with the waterline and specifically designed for sea access — makes it as easy to slip into the water as to step off a dock. The bow sundeck fills up with guests who prefer to dry off horizontally while the coastline passes at a gentle pace.

For those who want to go ashore, the afternoon offers two options: Palmaria Island, where a local restaurant serves Ligurian seafood at tables with a view across the water to Portovenere, or the village of Portovenere itself, its medieval lanes narrow enough that two people walking side by side must negotiate the passage with some creativity. Either option extends the day beyond the purely nautical and gives it a different texture entirely.

Back at Porto Mirabello by 5:00 p.m.: seven hours, a 20-metre yacht, a hostess, two UNESCO sites seen from the best possible angle, and the particular satisfaction of having experienced the Cinque Terre the way very few people ever do.

Does the Maiora 20 Fly enter the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area?

No. The Maiora 20 Fly does not hold the Cinque Terre Park Authority authorisation and therefore sails at the permitted distance of approximately 2 miles from the coast. This means no inshore mooring and no landing in Vernazza. The Cinque Terre are admired in full panoramic view from open water — a wide, complete perspective from the flybridge.

Can we go ashore during the Cinque Terre tour on the Maiora?

Yes — on the return leg through the Gulf of Poets. Guests may disembark on Palmaria Island for a typical Ligurian lunch (optional, not included) and/or in Portovenere for a walk through the medieval village. Landings inside the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area are not available on this vessel.

How is this tour different from the Cinque Terre tour on the Goletta?

The Maiora 20 Fly offers a more intimate, higher-service experience: max 12 guests, hostess on board, aperitif and towels included, panoramic flybridge and stern swim platform. The Goletta Kimera holds the Park Authority inshore authorisation and can enter the Marine Protected Area and land in Vernazza — the Maiora cannot.

If poor marine weather conditions prevent rhe regular running of the tours, it can be scheduled at a later date, alternatively the full amount paid will be refund
For cancellation by the customer
For cancellations up to 60 days before departure, no cancellation fee is required

From 29 to 15 days before departure cancellation fee will be 50%
