After boarding and a short briefing with the captain, the Mochi sets sail north along the coast towards the Gulf of Poets, heading first for the UNESCO-listed archipelago of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto — three spectacular undeveloped islands at the entrance to the gulf — before anchoring in front of Portovenere and the Church of San Pietro, built in the 13th century and framing the small cove below known as Byron's Cave.

The Cinque Terre from Open Water: Five Villages in One Panoramic View

From Portovenere the Mochi continues northwest along the coast to the Cinque Terre — the five legendary fishing villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. A small paradise of brightly coloured houses suspended on sheer cliffs above crystal-clear water, seen in full panoramic sequence from the open sea.

It is important to note that the Mochi Craft 46 Fly does not hold the Cinque Terre Park Authority authorisation to enter the Marine Protected Area. The boat therefore sails at the permitted distance of approximately 2 miles from the coast, offering a wide and complete view of all five villages from the flybridge. Inshore mooring and disembarkation in Vernazza are not available on this vessel. For guests seeking authorised inshore access and a village landing, the Cinque Terre on Goletta or Cinque Terre on Nimbus W9 tours offer the alternative.

After the Cinque Terre, the Mochi returns to the Gulf of Poets. Guests may disembark on Palmaria Island for a typical local lunch (optional, not included) and/or land in Portovenere for a stroll through the medieval alleys of the village. Throughout the day, multiple swimming stops are scheduled in sheltered coves along the route. Return to Viareggio at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Punctuality at boarding and disembarkation is required: delays will incur a charge of €120 per hour. In case of unjustified delay, the captain reserves the right to depart without the late guests.

From Viareggio to the Cinque Terre: The Complete Riviera in a Single Day

For guests based in Versilia, the standard approach to a Cinque Terre boat trip means an early morning drive to La Spezia, a search for parking, and the particular frustration of beginning a day on the sea with an hour on the motorway. The Mochi Craft 46 Fly removes all of that. The boat is based in Viareggio. It departs at 10:00 a.m. from the marina and returns to the same place at 6:30 p.m. What happens in between is a complete day along the most celebrated UNESCO coastline in Italy, on a 14-metre private motor yacht with 10 guests, a flybridge, a bow sundeck and twin engines powerful enough to cover the distance comfortably in both directions.

The route north from Viareggio crosses the Gulf of La Spezia and enters the Gulf of Poets from the south. The first landmarks are the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto — three UNESCO-protected islands entirely free of permanent structures, their limestone cliffs rising from water that has been protected long enough to recover to something close to its natural state. The crossing from Viareggio to the islands is covered efficiently by the Mochi’s twin 700 hp engines, and the flybridge — elevated above the waterline, with unobstructed views in every direction — is the right place to watch the coast of Liguria come into focus as the boat moves north.

Portovenere at Its Most Dramatic: Stone, Sea and Byron’s Cave

Portovenere is the first named stop. The Mochi anchors directly in front of the Church of San Pietro — 13th-century Gothic in black and white stone, at the very tip of the ancient promontory above Byron’s Cave, the sea arch and rocky cove that carries the name of Lord Byron, who reportedly swam from this point across the gulf to Lerici in the early 19th century. The medieval waterfront behind the church — the tall stacked houses in deep ochres and terracottas, the castle on the hill, the lanes visible behind the harbour — is one of the most complete and immediately legible pieces of Ligurian townscape accessible from the water. From the Mochi’s flybridge, the elevated perspective adds a dimension to the scene that the anchorage view alone does not provide.

From Portovenere the Mochi turns northwest and the Cinque Terre begin to appear along the cliff face. The five villages arrive in their south-to-north sequence: Riomaggiore first, its tower of coloured houses above the rocks; Manarola, the most vertically concentrated of the five; Corniglia on its headland, the only village without direct sea access; Vernazza with its natural harbour and medieval watchpost; and Monterosso al Mare, the largest and most western, its sandy beach the final frame of the sequence. Seen from 2 miles offshore — the permitted sailing distance for the Mochi, which does not hold the Park Authority inshore authorisation — the complete panorama of all five villages is visible simultaneously from the flybridge in a single wide frame that the close-up inshore view cannot replicate.

This is the view that photographers come to the coast to find and rarely manage from land: the full extent of the Cinque Terre landscape in one composition, the cliff face in its entirety, the villages in their relationship to each other and to the sea below them. The Mochi’s flybridge, at 14 metres of length and elevated well above the waterline, is the correct platform from which to see it.

The swimming stops happen in the sheltered coves of the gulf on the return leg, where the water quality inside the Marine Protected Area is consistently high and the anchorages are quiet even in high season. For guests who want to extend the day beyond the water, Palmaria Island offers a traditional Ligurian lunch ashore — seafood at a restaurant with a view across the gulf to Portovenere — and the village of Portovenere itself repays a second, slower visit on foot through the caruggi and up to the castle terrace above the harbour.
