Private Yacht Tour of the Gulf of Poets on the Maiora 20 Fly

Board the Maiora 20 Fly at Porto Mirabello, La Spezia, at 10:00 a.m. and return at 5:00 p.m. — a 7-hour private yacht day exploring the Gulf of Poets aboard a 20-metre motor yacht that combines generous deck spaces, a panoramic flybridge and exceptional on-board comfort, with an intimate maximum capacity of 12 guests. Completely refitted in 2024, the Maiora 20 Fly is the refined choice for groups who want the full Gulf of Poets itinerary without any compromise on the quality of the experience.

The tour opens on the eastern shore with Lerici, the medieval village dominated by the Castle of San Giorgio, before continuing south along the coast to the hidden hamlets of Fiascherino and Tellaro — two of the most unspoiled villages in Liguria, best reached and appreciated from the sea. The route then heads towards the open waters of the southern gulf and the UNESCO-listed archipelago of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto.

Portovenere, Byron's Cave and Going Ashore on Palmaria Island

The final destination is Portovenere, where the Maiora anchors in front of the Church of San Pietro, built in the 13th century and framing the famous small cove known as Byron's Cave. Throughout the day, multiple stops for swimming and snorkelling are scheduled in the most beautiful coves of the gulf — the elongated transom of the Maiora makes entering and exiting the water effortless, turning the stern into a natural platform for swimming and relaxing at the waterline. Snorkelling equipment and stand-up paddle are included on board.

A key feature of this tour is the option to go ashore: guests may disembark on Palmaria Island for a typical local lunch (optional, not included) and/or land in Portovenere for a walk through the picturesque alleys of the village.

On board, a hostess is included alongside the skipper, together with snacks, soft drinks, towels and a welcome aperitif — a service standard designed for guests who expect every detail to be taken care of from the moment they step aboard.

Itineraries are subject to weather and sea conditions. The skipper may modify the route at any time to ensure the safety of all guests. Punctuality at boarding and disembarkation is required: delays will incur a charge of €120 per hour. In case of unjustified delay, the captain reserves the right to depart without the late guests.

The Gulf of Poets on a Private Yacht: An Elevated Day on the Water

There is a version of the Gulf of Poets experience that is deliberately unhurried, deliberately small, and deliberately well-served. The Maiora 20 Fly tour is that version. At just over 20 metres in length and fully refitted in 2024, this motor yacht was built around one idea: that space and light make everything better. The large panoramic windows that flood the interior with natural light, the flybridge open to the sky with unobstructed views in every direction, the broad bow sundeck designed for doing nothing at all — every detail of the vessel is an argument for slowing down and paying attention to where you are. With a maximum of 12 guests and a skipper and hostess already on board, the Maiora handles the logistics so that you do not have to.

The day begins at Porto Mirabello, La Spezia, at 10:00 a.m. and moves immediately east along the shore towards Lerici. The approach from the water is the right one: the Castle of San Giorgio looms above the village at an angle you cannot get from the road, its medieval bulk perfectly reflected in the harbour below. Lerici is where Percy Bysshe Shelley spent the last months of his life, in a house he could reach by rowing from the shore. The connection between this coast and the English Romantic poets is not incidental — it is written into the landscape itself.

Fiascherino, Tellaro and the Secrets Only the Sea Reveals

South of Lerici the coast becomes quieter and the villages smaller. Fiascherino is a handful of painted houses around a pebble inlet; Tellaro is perched on a rocky point above the water, its church at the very edge of the cliff. Both are the kind of places that exist in a state of benign obscurity precisely because they are not on the road to anywhere. The Maiora reaches them in minutes; by car, it is another matter entirely.

The archipelago of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto opens up as the boat rounds the southern headland of the gulf. These three UNESCO-listed islands are among the most biologically intact marine environments in the northern Mediterranean. The swimming stops here are genuinely worthwhile — the water clarity in a protected zone of this kind is something that photographs rarely convey accurately. The Maiora’s elongated transom makes every water entry and exit natural and easy, and the stern platform quickly becomes the social centre of the afternoon: part swim deck, part sun terrace, part bar.

What distinguishes this tour from other Gulf of Poets options is the opportunity to land on Palmaria Island. The island has a restaurant serving traditional Ligurian seafood — the kind of lunch that tastes better because of where you are eating it — and hiking trails along the clifftop with views back across the gulf. An hour ashore here transforms the day from a boat trip into something closer to a proper exploration.

Portovenere is the culmination of the itinerary. From the water its identity is immediately legible: the long row of medieval houses in their deep, saturated colours, the Church of San Pietro above the sea with Byron’s Cave below it — the rocky arch and small sea cave that carries the name of the poet who reportedly swam from this very point across the gulf to Lerici. The Maiora anchors here and guests who wish to walk the village — the narrow caruggi, the harbour, the panoramic terrace above the church — have time to do so before the return to La Spezia at 5:00 p.m.

Seven hours. Twelve guests maximum. A 20-metre yacht refitted in 2024, a flybridge, a sundeck, a hostess, and a coastline that inspired some of the greatest poetry in the English language. The Maiora 20 Fly does not do this at scale. It does it properly.
