Private Boat Tour to Cinque Terre & Portovenere on the Fairline 39 Targa

Boarding at Porto Mirabello, La Spezia at approximately 10:00 a.m., return at approximately 5:00 p.m. — a 7-hour private day on the water aboard the Fairline 39 Targa, a 12-metre motor yacht completely refitted in 2024, with a maximum of 8 guests on an exclusive charter. After boarding and a short briefing with the captain, the Fairline sets sail south towards the UNESCO-listed archipelago of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto — three spectacular undeveloped islands at the entrance to the Gulf of Poets — before anchoring in front of Portovenere and the Church of San Pietro, built in the 13th century and framing the small cove below known as Byron's Cave.

From Portovenere the Fairline continues northwest along the coast to the Cinque Terre — the five legendary fishing villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Their colourful houses suspended on sheer cliffs above crystal-clear water are one of the defining images of the Italian coast. Seen from the sea, the full sequence of five villages is visible in a single sweeping panorama that no land-based viewpoint can match.

Cinque Terre Panoramic Sailing and the Return to the Gulf of Poets

It is important to note that the Fairline 39 Targa does not hold the Cinque Terre Park Authority authorisation to enter the Marine Protected Area. The boat therefore sails at the permitted distance of approximately 2 miles from the coast, offering a wide and complete panoramic view of all five villages from open water. Inshore mooring at the designated buoys and disembarkation in Vernazza are not available on this vessel. For guests seeking inshore access and a village landing, the Cinque Terre on Goletta or Cinque Terre on Nimbus W9 tours offer the authorised alternative.

After the Cinque Terre, the Fairline returns to the Gulf of Poets. Guests have the option to disembark on Palmaria Island for a typical local lunch (optional, not included) and/or land in Portovenere for a stroll through the picturesque medieval alleys of the village. Throughout the day, multiple stops for swimming and relaxing in the sun are scheduled in the most sheltered coves along the route. Return to Porto Mirabello, La Spezia at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Itineraries are subject to weather and sea conditions. The skipper may modify the route at any time to ensure the safety of all guests. Punctuality at boarding and disembarkation is required: delays will incur a charge of €120 per hour. In case of unjustified delay, the captain reserves the right to depart without the late guests.

Cinque Terre by Private Boat: The Full Panorama from Open Water

The Cinque Terre are among the most photographed places in Italy, but most of those photographs are taken from the hiking trails above or from the village streets within. The view that the photographers rarely have — and that is in some ways the most complete — is the one from the open sea: all five villages in a single frame, the full extent of the cliff face visible at once, the relationship between the architecture and the landscape legible in a way that no close-up perspective allows. This is what the Fairline 39 Targa offers on this itinerary: the wide panoramic view of the Cinque Terre coast, from the comfort of a 12-metre private motor yacht with 8 guests and two sundecks.

The day begins at Porto Mirabello, La Spezia, at 10:00 a.m. The first part of the route heads south towards the archipelago of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto — three UNESCO-protected islands at the mouth of the Gulf of Poets whose limestone cliffs and clean, clear water establish the visual register for the day. The Fairline’s twin Volvo Penta engines make the crossing efficient, and the large bow sundeck is already occupied by the time the islands come into view.

Portovenere: The Medieval Waterfront and Byron’s Cave

Portovenere is the first major stop, the Fairline anchoring directly in front of the Church of San Pietro — 13th-century Gothic stonework in black and white, at the very tip of the ancient promontory above Byron’s Cave. The sea cave and natural arch below the church carry the name of Lord Byron, who spent time on this gulf in the early 19th century. The medieval waterfront behind the church — the tall stacked houses in ochre and deep red, the castle on the hill above, the narrow lanes running back into the village — is one of the most concentrated pieces of Ligurian townscape on the coast. From the Fairline’s stern cockpit, converted into a second sundeck and positioned low and close to the water, the scene is immediate and completely unobstructed.

From Portovenere the Fairline turns northwest and the Cinque Terre begin. The five villages appear in their south-to-north sequence as the boat moves along the coast: Riomaggiore first, its coloured tower of houses stacked above the rocks; Manarola, arguably the most vertically dramatic of the five; Corniglia high on its headland, the only village with no direct sea access; Vernazza, with its perfect natural harbour and its watchful medieval tower; and Monterosso al Mare, the largest, its long sandy beach the westernmost point of the sequence.

Because the Fairline 39 Targa sails outside the Marine Protected Area — at the permitted 2-mile distance — the perspective is the wide one: all five villages visible in relation to each other and to the landscape that contains them, the full scale of the cliffs apparent in a way that the inshore view does not always reveal. The bow sundeck is the best place to watch this unfold, lying flat with the coastline moving slowly past above the horizon line. It is a genuinely different experience from the close-up inshore passage, and for many guests the more cinematically satisfying one.

The swimming stops are timed to the warmest part of the day and to the most sheltered coves available along the route. The Fairline’s stern cockpit configuration — the table that converts into a full sundeck — means that the transition from swimming back to relaxing on deck is seamless, and the boat quickly becomes the kind of environment where no one is in any particular hurry to move on.

The return to the Gulf of Poets brings the option of going ashore. Palmaria Island has a restaurant serving traditional Ligurian seafood — the kind of lunch that is straightforwardly better because of where you are eating it. Portovenere on foot, on a second visit, has a different texture from the anchorage view: the narrow caruggi, the castle terrace above the village, the harbour at eye level rather than from the water. The Fairline is back at Porto Mirabello by approximately 5:00 p.m.

There are no shared departures. All 8 guests have exclusive use of the boat, both sundecks, and the crew for the full 7 hours.

Can we visit Portovenere and Palmaria Island on this tour?

Yes. After the Cinque Terre, the boat returns to the Gulf of Poets where guests can disembark on Palmaria Island for a typical local lunch (optional, not included) and/or land in Portovenere for a walk through the medieval village. Both options are available within the 7-hour itinerary.

If poor marine weather conditions prevent rhe regular running of the tours, it can be scheduled at a later date, alternatively the full amount paid will be refund
