Private Boat Tour of the Gulf of Poets on the Fairline 39 Targa

Boarding at Porto Mirabello, La Spezia at 10:00 a.m., return at 5:00 p.m. — a 7-hour private day on the water aboard the Fairline 39 Targa, a 12-metre motor yacht completely refitted in 2024, with a maximum of 8 guests on an exclusive charter. Fast, comfortable and well-designed for this coastline, the Fairline combines a large bow sundeck and a stern cockpit with convertible sundeck to give guests generous outdoor space across the full length of the boat — ideal for a long day exploring the Gulf of Poets.

The tour opens on the eastern shore with Lerici, the medieval village dominated by the Castle of San Giorgio, before continuing south along the coast to the hidden villages of Fiascherino and Tellaro — two of Liguria's most atmospheric and least-visited communities, accessible in any meaningful way only from the sea. The route then heads into the open waters of the southern gulf towards the UNESCO-listed archipelago of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, three spectacular islands entirely unspoiled by development.

Portovenere, Byron's Cave, Aperitif and Optional Lunch on Palmaria

The final destination is Portovenere, where the Fairline anchors in front of the Church of San Pietro, built in the 13th century and framing the small natural cove known as Byron's Cave. Throughout the day, multiple stops for swimming and snorkelling are scheduled in the most sheltered and beautiful coves of the gulf. The Fairline's twin Volvo Penta engines make transfers between stops quick and efficient, leaving more time at anchor in the places that matter.

On board, an aperitif of local Ligurian products accompanied by wine is included — a welcome that sets the flavour of the coast before the guests go ashore. Guests also have the option to disembark on Palmaria Island for a typical local lunch (optional, not included) and/or land in Portovenere for a walk through the picturesque medieval alleys of the village.

Itineraries are subject to weather and sea conditions. The skipper may modify the route at any time to ensure the safety of all guests. Punctuality at boarding and disembarkation is required: delays will incur a charge of €120 per hour. In case of unjustified delay, the captain reserves the right to depart without the late guests.

The Gulf of Poets on the Fairline 39: Space, Speed and the Right Coast

The Fairline 39 Targa occupies a specific and useful position in the fleet. At 12 metres, completely refitted in 2024 and powered by twin Volvo Penta engines, it is faster and more spacious than the Nimbus W9 and more manoeuvrable and closer-in than the Maiora 20 Fly — a motor yacht that suits groups of up to 8 guests who want genuine comfort on deck without the scale of a larger charter. The large bow sundeck and the stern cockpit with its convertible sundeck table mean that there is never a shortage of space to stretch out, and the transitions between the two are easy enough that the whole boat feels like one continuous outdoor living area.

Departure from Porto Mirabello, La Spezia at 10:00 a.m., and the first part of the route moves east along the shore towards Lerici. The Castle of San Giorgio defines the village from the water — a medieval fortification on a low promontory, solid and unhurried above the harbour it has been watching since the 13th century. Lerici is where Shelley lived in the months before his death. The castle now houses a palaeontology museum of some significance. The combination is typical of this coast: centuries of history occupying the same ground as the contemporary, without apparent conflict.

Fiascherino, Tellaro and the Quiet Side of the Gulf

South of Lerici the coast changes character. The road moves inland and the villages become smaller, more isolated, more dependent on the sea for their identity. Fiascherino is a cluster of painted houses around a small pebble inlet — the kind of place that requires local knowledge to find by land, and that the Fairline reaches in minutes from the water. Tellaro is on a rocky headland above the sea, its church right at the cliff edge, the village tight and compact in a way that speaks of centuries of managing a limited and exposed site. Both villages are best seen slowly, from the water, without agenda. The Fairline’s cockpit is a comfortable place from which to do exactly this.

The archipelago of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto follows — the three UNESCO-protected islands that mark the boundary between the Gulf of Poets and the open Ligurian Sea. The Marine Protected Area status has kept the water here exceptionally clear and the seabed largely intact. The swimming stops in the coves between the islands are among the most rewarding of the day: calm, sheltered, with the kind of underwater visibility that makes snorkelling genuinely worthwhile rather than merely decorative.

Somewhere in the middle of the afternoon, the aperitif arrives on deck — local Ligurian products and a glass of wine, served at anchor in the gulf. The Ligurian pantry is specific and excellent: the anchovies from these waters, the wines from the terraced vineyards above the coast, the olives from the hillside groves. Eating and drinking it on a private boat moored in the place it comes from gives it a context that no restaurant table can replicate.

For guests who want to extend the day beyond the purely nautical, Palmaria Island offers a traditional Ligurian lunch ashore — seafood at a table with a view across the water to Portovenere — and the village of Portovenere itself is the final stop: the Church of San Pietro above Byron’s Cave, the medieval waterfront in its deep colours, the narrow caruggi behind the harbour for those who go ashore on foot. The Fairline is back at Porto Mirabello by 5:00 p.m.

If poor marine weather conditions prevent rhe regular running of the tours, it can be scheduled at a later date, alternatively the full amount paid will be refund
For cancellation by the customer
For cancellations up to 60 days before departure, no cancellation fee is required
From 59 to 30 days before departure cancellation fee will be 30%
From 29 to 15 days before departure cancellation fee will be 50%
For cancellation within 14 days before departure, there is no refund
